On 25 October, Jorge Fontes, researcher at OKEANOS – Institute of Marine Sciences of the University of the Azores, participated in Diving Talks 2026 in Lisbon, where he delivered a presentation entitled “One Breath Science: Freediving and Non-Invasive Tech to Unveil Marine Megafauna Mysteries”.

The presentation highlighted the combination of freediving techniques and non-invasive biological monitoring technologies (biologging) to study the behaviour of marine megafauna, particularly sharks and rays, in their natural environment while minimising disturbance to these animals.

The talk also demonstrated how combining scientific research, technological development and non-invasive observation techniques can help overcome the challenges associated with studying marine megafauna, providing essential knowledge to support the conservation and management of these species.
