Between 23 and 25 September, Pavilhão do Mar in Ponta Delgada hosted Macaronight, a European initiative part of the European Researchers’ Night, which aims to bring the scientific community of Macaronesia closer to society.

Over three days, children, young people, families and schools had the opportunity to discover different areas of science through experiments, games, demonstrations and interactive activities, while meeting researchers and scientific institutions from the Azores.

OKEANOS, in collaboration with the DOP – Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores, took part in the event with an activity developed within the MONiPOL project. In partnership with the Azores Marine Observatory (OMA), the initiative aimed to promote ocean literacy, with a particular focus on seafood. The activity developed by OMA invited participants to follow the journey “from fishing to the plate”, exploring the different stages connecting marine resources to consumers and encouraging a better understanding of where seafood comes from and the importance of making informed choices.

Taking part in Macaronight was also an opportunity to showcase the work carried out by OKEANOS and DOP, promoting awareness of marine research conducted on Faial Island.

More than simply sharing knowledge, Macaronight is an opportunity to spark scientific curiosity, particularly among younger generations, and create spaces for dialogue between researchers and society.
