Régis Santos has a PhD in Biological Sciences by the Federal University of the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is an Assistant Researcher at University of the Azores, leading the Fisheries Research Group. He has 15 years of research experience in fish ecology, fisheries biology, and stock assessment. He is actively involved in several expert groups within the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), including the Working Group on Elasmobranch Fishes (WGEF), the Working Group on Biology and Assessment of Deep-Sea Fisheries Resources (WGDEEP), and chairs the Working Group on Integrated Assessment of the Azores (WGIAZOR). He provides stock assessment and fisheries advice by implementing statistical methodologies and examines the sustainability of small-scale fisheries using multidisciplinary approaches and sustainability indicators. Currently, he is also focused on promoting positive relationships between fishery stakeholders in the Azores – mainly fishers, scientists and policy-makers – by combining science outreach and participatory processes. His research is reflected on 80 technical reports and working documents, 45 conference abstracts, and 30 scientific articles related to fish biology and ecology, and fisheries. Another area of interest and expertise for him is planktonology.
