OKEANOS researchers contribute to the Atlas of Portugal’s Ecosystems

The Atlas of Portugal’s Ecosystems, published by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation, brings together and illustrates the ecological diversity of Portugal, providing a comprehensive overview of its terrestrial, aquatic and marine ecosystems, as well as the interfaces between these environments. Combining a scientific approach with illustrations that bring the diversity of natural landscapes and environments to life, the book aims to bring readers closer to Portugal’s natural heritage and raise awareness of the importance of its conservation.

The book features contributions from several researchers from the Institute of Marine Sciences – OKEANOS, University of the Azores, who contributed to different chapters focusing on marine ecosystems:
  • Ana Colaço and Daphne Cuvelier contributed to the chapter on cold seeps and hydrothermal vents, unique ecosystems associated with the deep sea.
  • Pedro Afonso and Filipe M. Porteiro contributed to the chapter on the open ocean, exploring the ecological diversity of this vast marine environment.
  • Gui M. Menezes was one of the contributing authors to Chapter 4, dedicated to the continental shelf and island shelves.

Despite its relatively small size, Portugal is home to remarkable ecological diversity, forming a mosaic of natural and human-modified ecosystems. The Atlas highlights not only the diversity between ecosystems but also the variability within them, while drawing attention to the human pressures that contribute to shaping and transforming these environments.
More than a portrait of Portugal’s ecological diversity, the Atlas of Portugal’s Ecosystems is an invitation to discover and learn about the natural environments that surround us. Only by knowing can we appreciate, and only by understanding can we respect and protect the biodiversity they hold.

This book is available for consultation at our library, José Ávila Martins Library.
