No dia 7 de setembro, o Instituto OKEANOS esteve presente na sessão “Entre Dois Oceanos – O legado açoriano na pesca do atum no Oceano Pacífico Oriental”, realizada na Horta, com três intervenções que abordaram diferentes dimensões da ligação entre os Açores e a pesca do atum.
Miguel Machete, Coordenador do Programa de Observação para as Pescas dos Açores (POPA), falou sobre o papel da observação científica na monitorização das pescas e a importância dos dados para uma gestão sustentável dos recursos de atum. Ana Martins, oceanógrafa e Professora Associada da Universidade dos Açores, apresentou a perspetiva da oceanografia, explorando a relação entre a dinâmica do oceano e os recursos e pescarias destes peixes.
A sessão foi encerrada por Gui Menezes, Diretor do Instituto OKEANOS, que destacou a relevância da investigação científica desenvolvida pela instituição desde 1976, bem como a importância da colaboração entre a ciência, o setor das pescas e as comunidades para compreender e promover uma gestão sustentável destes recursos.

On 7 September, the OKEANOS Institute took part in the “Between Two Oceans – The Azorean Legacy in Tuna Fishing in the Eastern Pacific Ocean” session, held in Horta, with three presentations addressing different aspects of the connection between the Azores and tuna fisheries.

Miguel Machete, Coordinator of the Azores Fisheries Observer Programme (POPA), spoke about the role of scientific observation in fisheries monitoring and the importance of data for the sustainable management of tuna resources. Ana Martins, oceanographer and Associate Professor at the University of the Azores, presented the oceanographic perspective, exploring the relationship between ocean dynamics and tuna resources and fisheries.

The session was concluded by Gui Menezes, Director of the OKEANOS Institute, who highlighted the relevance of the scientific research carried out by the institution since 1976, as well as the importance of collaboration between science, the fisheries sector and local communities to better understand and sustainably manage these resources.
