In this episode of the Mar de Ideias podcast, dedicated to promoting Ocean literacy, we talk to Miguel Machete, coordinator of the Azores Fisheries Observation Programme (POPA), about the importance of scientific observation in fisheries monitoring and the sustainable management of marine resources.

In an interview conducted by Paulo Santos, a journalist with more than 30 years of experience who, as a biologist himself, accepted the invitation to collaborate on this project, this series of conversations explores the challenges and opportunities facing our Ocean.

Throughout the episode, we learn about the origins and evolution of POPA, a programme that has been monitoring the Azores tuna fishery for several decades through the deployment of scientific observers aboard tuna fishing vessels. In addition to collecting data on catches and fishing effort, observers record information on cetaceans, seabirds, sea turtles and marine litter, contributing to a broader understanding of marine ecosystems.

The conversation also explores the links between the tuna fisheries of the Azores and Madeira, the role of scientific data in the sustainable management of fish stocks, and the importance of collaboration between researchers, the fishing sector and government authorities.
