OKEANOS · Building 01

A public landmark in the heart of Horta, fronting the Jardim Florêncio Terra gardens — this building carried a full civic life before OKEANOS's own, and still carries some of that character: an institutional façade, a public library, an auditorium for sharing results, quite unlike DOP Mar's working waterfront setting. Its analytical & biological laboratories sit behind that public front, doing the quieter, benchwork side of the institute's science.

OKEANOS — DOP TERRA — YEAR 1901

1901

The cornerstone is laid. The project, by architects João Joaquim André de Freitas and António da Cunha Meneses Brum, is funded in large part by a donation from benefactor Walter Bensaúde to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Horta.

OKEANOS — DOP TERRA — YEAR 1903

1903

The first two wards open to patients, while the rest of the building is still under construction.

OKEANOS — DOP TERRA — YEAR 1911

1911

Construction is completed: a symmetrical, pavilion-style building typical of 19th-century hospital architecture, built partly with reused stone from the old Convento de Nossa Senhora da Glória.

1921

The hospital is renamed Hospital Walter Bensaúde, in honour of its benefactor.

OKEANOS — DOP TERRA — YEAR 1973

1973

The building is severely damaged by the Faial earthquake; hospital services are progressively relocated elsewhere in Horta.

2001

The Fundação Gaspar Frutuoso acquires the vacant, earthquake-damaged building.

2006

The Fundação donates the building to the University of the Azores.
