A working waterfront building at the Cais de Santa Cruz, right behind Horta's fishing port — plainer and more utilitarian than DOP Terra's civic presence downtown, and still shaped by that setting: boats, gear and tanks rather than offices and reading rooms. Today it houses OKEANOS's experimental laboratories and the equipment staged for sea missions, keeping alive the institute's oldest working relationship — with the fishing community that has always been its neighbour.

OKEANOS — DOP MAR — YEAR 1970s

1970s

After a brief stay in a building of the old submarine-cables complex, DOP settles at the Cais de Santa Cruz — in half of the building of the former disinfection post and public bathhouses, right behind Horta's fishing port, for close ties with fishermen and the fish market.

OKEANOS — DOP MAR — YEAR 1980s

1980s

The public bathhouses close and DOP expands into the rest of the building; prefabricated structures are later added to accommodate a growing team. These remain DOP's facilities — described at the time as precarious — until 2010.

OKEANOS — DOP MAR — YEAR 2010

2010

DOP's main operations move to the restored Walter Bensaúde building, now DOP Terra. The Cais de Santa Cruz site continues on as DOP Mar, supporting sea-mission operations, storing equipment for data collection, and experimental laboratories.
