I am a post-doctoral Junior Researcher at the Institute of Marine Sciences – OKEANOS, University of the Azores (UAz). I have a PhD in Marine Sciences. In 1998, I began to work as a Research Assistant at the Natural Reserve of the Sado Estuary (RNES) in the scope of the Cetacean Monitoring Project. Since 2005, I have been working at the Azores Whale Lab - Cetacean Ecology Group (OKEANOS/IMAR - Institute of Marine Research, UAz), participated in several research projects, specializing in hydroacoustics, passive acoustic monitoring and cetaceans’ bioacoustics. My main research interest focuses on the Spatial Ecology of cetaceans, with an emphasis to explore the role of seamounts/open ocean in regulating predator-prey interactions, using active (scientific echosounders) and passive (hydrophones) acoustic techniques. Additionally, I have focused on studying the impact of underwater noise on marine ecosystems, and simultaneously, collaborated with colleagues from the University of Algarve in the development of a noise model for the Azores to estimate and map the level of anthropogenic noise.
