Ontem, a Biblioteca Pública e Arquivo Regional João José da Graça, na Horta, acolheu a apresentação pública do Estudo Multidisciplinar para o Conhecimento da alga invasora Rugulopteryx okamurae na Região Autónoma dos Açores, uma iniciativa promovida pela Direção Regional das Políticas Marítimas, em colaboração com a Universidade dos Açores.

Desenvolvido por investigadores do OKEANOS, CIBIO-Açores, IITAA e cE3c, com a colaboração do IMAR e do AIR Centre, o estudo revela que, desde o primeiro registo da espécie em São Miguel, em 2019, a alga já se encontra distribuída por praticamente todas as ilhas dos grupos Oriental e Central, existindo indícios da sua chegada ao Grupo Ocidental. Em várias zonas costeiras, forma extensos mantos que substituem as macroalgas nativas e reduzem significativamente a biodiversidade dos habitats bentónicos.

Os resultados mostram ainda que a espécie apresenta uma elevada capacidade de adaptação às condições ambientais dos Açores e um crescimento particularmente intenso na primavera. A combinação de trabalho de campo, imagens de satélite e ciência-cidadã permitiu reforçar a monitorização dos arrojamentos de biomassa no verão, abrindo caminho ao desenvolvimento de sistemas de alerta precoce para antecipar episódios de acumulação da alga nas praias açorianas.

Para além de caracterizar a invasão, o estudo identificou oportunidades para valorizar esta biomassa através da produção de biocarvão, biofertilizantes e compostos bioativos com potencial aplicação nas indústrias farmacêutica, cosmética e biotecnológica. Embora a erradicação da espécie não seja atualmente possível, os resultados constituem uma base científica essencial para apoiar estratégias de monitorização, mitigação e gestão desta bioinvasão nos Açores.

ENG Yesterday, the João José da Graça Public Library and Regional Archive, in Horta, hosted the public presentation of the Multidisciplinary Study to Advance Knowledge of the Invasive Seaweed Rugulopteryx okamurae in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, an initiative promoted by the Regional Directorate for Maritime Policies in collaboration with the University of the Azores.

The study, carried out by researchers from OKEANOS, CIBIO-Azores, IITAA, and cE3c, with the collaboration of IMAR and the AIR Centre, reveals that since the species was first recorded on São Miguel Island in 2019, it has spread across nearly all islands of the Eastern and Central Groups of the Azores, with evidence suggesting its arrival in the Western Group. In several coastal areas, the seaweed forms extensive mats that replace native macroalgae and significantly reduce the biodiversity of benthic habitats.

The findings also show that the species is highly adaptable to the environmental conditions of the Azores and experiences particularly rapid growth during spring. By combining field surveys, satellite imagery, and citizen science, the research has strengthened the monitoring of summer beach strandings, paving the way for the development of early warning systems capable of anticipating major biomass accumulation events along the Azorean coastline.

Beyond documenting the invasion, the study identified opportunities to valorise the accumulated biomass through the production of biochar, biofertilisers, and bioactive compounds with potential applications in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and biotechnology industries. Although eradication of the species is currently not feasible, the findings provide a robust scientific foundation to support future monitoring, mitigation, and management strategies for this marine bioinvasion in the Azores.
