𝘓𝘦𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘪 and 𝘓𝘦𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘥𝘶𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘢 have just been described in Coral Reefs, revealing that colonies long identified as 𝘓𝘦𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘢 were actually two distinct species.

Using phylogenomics and scanning electron microscopy, the azores deep-sea researh team resolved decades of taxonomic confusion in collaborative work with the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. 

A reminder that the deep sea of the Azores still harbors an extraordinary wealth of biodiversity and that many discoveries are yet to come.

PT Dois novos corais negros descobertos no Atlântico Norte, com representantes no mar profundo dos Açores!

𝘓𝘦𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘥𝘶𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘢 e 𝘓𝘦𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘪 são duas novas espécies de coral negro do mar profundo, descritas num estudo publicado na Coral Reefs. Durante décadas, estas colónias foram identificadas como 𝘓𝘦𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘢, mas afinal tratavam-se de duas espécies distintas.

Décadas de confusão taxonómica resolvidas com filogenómica e morfologia ao microscópio electrónico. Um trabalho em parceria com o Museu Nacional de História Natural do Instituto Smithsonian @smithsoniannmnh que nos lembra que ainda há muita biodiversidade escondida no mar profundo dos Açores.
