Today marks the conclusion of the 3rd International Workshop on Seafloor Macrolitter, held in Athens from 21–24 April.
Christopher Pham, an Okeanos researcher, participated in and co-organised this global initiative alongside leading institutions, including the European Commission Joint Research Centre, IFREMER, JAMSTEC, East China University, the University of Barcelona, the University of Patras, and the Alfred Wegener Institute.
Now in its third edition, the workshop brings together international experts to define common methodologies and standards for a globally harmonised approach to seafloor macrolitter monitoring. The programme also explores global distribution patterns, environmental impacts, and innovative solutions—from artificial intelligence for litter detection to advanced decision-support tools for clean-up operations. Christopher is leading a key task focused on establishing best practices for seafloor litter monitoring, contributing to a stronger, coordinated global framework.
