Investigadores analisaram 17 anos de observações entre os Açores e Portugal continental, documentando casos de emaranhamento que afetaram tubarões, tartarugas marinhas, aves, golfinhos e baleias no Atlântico NE. A maioria dos casos envolveu artes de pesca perdidas e plásticos descartáveis, resultando frequentemente em lesões como constrições, feridas e até mortalidade.

Estes resultados mostram como o lixo marinho flutuante está a exercer uma pressão adicional, muitas vezes invisível, nos ecossistemas do oceano aberto, reforçando a necessidade urgente de monitorização e partilha de dados.

EN What happens when plastic meets marine megafauna in the open ocean?

Researchers analysed 17 years of observations across the Azores and mainland Portugal, documenting entanglement events affecting sharks, sea turtles, seabirds, dolphins, and whales in the NE Atlantic. Most cases involved abandoned fishing gear and single-use plastics, often leading to injuries such as constrictions, wounds, and even mortality.

These findings highlight how floating marine debris are placing additional, often overlooked pressure on open ocean ecosystems and the urgent need for stronger monitoring and data sharing.
